Style Once, Wear for a Week

One of the reasons I've always been hesitant to grow my hair long was the fear of all the work it would be to style and maintain. I liked the wash-and-go convenience of short hair {although with round brushing and straight ironing, it wasn't exactly maintenance free.} However, when finances forced me to quit my hairdresser, I discovered how easy long hair actually is!

Currently, I only wash and set my hair once {usually Sunday} and rely on the resulting curls to carry me through the rest of the week. Here's how:

{1} I like to set my hair using elevated pin curls. To do this, start with clean, air-dried hair. Lightly mist all over with a water bottle. {2} Section off a piece of hair. Notice that the ends still look dry and frazzled. {3} Dab your fingers into some leave-in conditioner or finishing creme and smooth it onto the ends of your section of hair. I use John Frieda's Smoothing Creme. {4} Carefully roll the section of hair all the way up to your scalp. {5} Secure with a flat, single pronged clip. Proceed to the next section of hair until finished. {6} After a few hours {I take that time to eat, get dressed, and get the kids ready for church} remove the clips and lightly shake out the curls with your fingers.

The first day is the curliest, but there are lots of things I do with my hair the rest of the week:

Wear a hat! {I steal J's hat regularly}

Put it in a pony tail! Low side-pony's are nice and retro-looking.

And of course, everyone loves to go granny-chic and wear a bun. :) Do you favor long hair or short? Any hairstyles I should try? I've been eyeing a few braids...

PS I still shower every day after running, but with a little baby powder or dry shampoo, it isn't really necessary to wash my hair more than once a week. Liberating!

  1. So, I'd be curious to see what you would tell me to do with my hair if I let it air dry. It would look NOTHING like yours. I long for easy to care for hair and this looks ideal, but I'm not sure it is compatible with my natural hair texture.

    1. What is your hair texture? I have very fine hair, but TONS of it. Any time I get it cut ( or permed, back in the early 90's) the hairdresser always comments on the sheer volume of hair and usually thins it to make it more manageable.

  2. oooh love this. I'll have to try it when my hair is longer. Like you, I'm letting it grow for financial considerations...

I've never had hair much past my chin and right now it's like 2 inches past my chin, so quite a change!

My hair is quite curly naturally, but the curl is uneven, so I think something like this would help. I need to get some pin curls!

  3. Hair. I've got lots of it and not enough patience to make it look spectacular most of the time.

I've been admiring your long curls for awhile now. Thanks for the tutorial!

  4. You have long hair now!!!
    It looks SO good.
And the way that you are styling it and also by the way you dress, you look hot! HOT!!
Miss you tons. Can't wait to see you, even for a brief moment, in July.

  5. I have fine hair but an ample amount. Unfortunately, when it air dries it is a frizzy/wavy (not the good kind of wavy) mess.

  6. I LOVE the shot on your opening graphic. And I love all the other shots, too. Your hair is so lovely after the pin curls! And I loved seeing how you do that. I wish I could get away with NOT washing my hair every day. Or even just every few days. I love how you make your hair look fabulous all week long!

  7. I love the picture in the opening graphic. And I love all the other pictures. Seeing how you use pin curls and the results is awesome! I wish I could get away with washing my hair any less than every day. I love how you make your hair look fabulous for a whole week. :)

  8. Next time I have time I'm excited to try your technique. I usually stop on the step one, and lately with baby 4 I even stop after wash and rinse! Crazy! Love the hat look!

  9. PS, how do you keep our blond, fine, straight hair from getting those dark and slightly greasy looking roots over the course of the week?

  10. Brilliant! I often opt for the spend 30 minutes curling my hair and touch it up all week long option, but I'm definitely going to have to try this no heat option!

Also Nicole, I always like to keep baking soda in the bathroom. Baking soda, or really any white powder, corn starch is another great option, can be applied with a powder brush to your roots to keep your hair looking fresh! I'll pile it on at night so that it has a chance to absorb.
