It hardly feels like home.

I'll get back to my travelogue tomorrow {there's still SO much to document!} but right now I have to take a moment to acknowledge how bitter-sweet it is to be home.

To be honest, I'm having a hard time of it. It's hot. J hates watching Midsomer Murders and Project Runway. My house seems huge, under-decorated and empty. I keep turning around, expecting to see my parents or one of my sisters-in-law. And it's HOT.

I established patterns, routines and inside jokes that now carry over into my Arizona life, but constantly remind me of the people I left behind. So suddenly, even a Gloworm is loaded with enough emotion and memories to make me teary-eyed! I find myself carrying on, making steel cut oats, shopping at Goodwill,  and buying Dove ice cream bars, but it's as if an arm has been amputated. Something's missing. It's not the same.

But it's early days. We're slowly unpacking, tackling mountains of laundry and reacquainting ourselves with chore charts and task lists.

*sigh* And dreaming of our next family reunion.

  1. I'm glad I'm not the only one!! I'm over at mom and pops right now - taking care of the chickens and I'm wondering where everyone has gone. We went from having almost everyone here to no one...it's kind of creepy and definitely lonely. Nothing beats family - as many friends as I have here - family is just ...AMAZING!!! Miss you tons! Hope Az cools off soon so at least you'll have that ;)

  2. I know how you feel. I feel the same way when I leave Pittsburgh after our 2 week trip out there every summer. It will always be my home. It makes me sad (a bit) to know that my kids have their little roots in the soil in AZ, especially since my daughter has lived here longer than she's lived in PA. That was a bittersweet turning point.

  3. Wow is this all too familiar! Why is coming home from a long vacation to see family so difficult? I always have some sort of break down when we're still living out of our suitcase and there's not free hands to help with the kids and it's SO HOT and HUMID and you just want someone around during the day to say its going to be fine and you'll adjust soon enough:). I'm so glad you had such an amazing summer! Good luck with getting back into the swing of things, it happens before you know it, then the other "home" seems like a dream...

  4. Hey, you don't know me:) Found your blog on Amy Webbs blog and was browsing and saw that you live in AZ? Moved here recently? so did we, from NYC so I'm also having a little bit of a sad time settling in. Where are you in AZ? We are in Glendale... if you're anywhere close I'd love to hit some thrift shops or something with ya! one of my favorite past times!
