Then, feigning a hurt wing, she darted off, attempting to draw me away from her hidden treasure:
Seeing the speckled, camouflaged eggs up close was so fascinating, I came back later with kids and camera in tow. We oohed and aaaahed, careful not to touch and making an effort to hurry as the mama bird circled, doing her best to interrupt our scrutiny.
I recently read a book on unschooling with a chapter entitled, "Animals are better than books about animals". After our little encounter with the killdeer, I whole-heartedly agree. :)
What a neat example in nature of how mothers protect...and nurture too. I can't tell you how many times simple distraction averted more weighty discipline in our family..
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find! These are awesome birds! We frequently would find nests while out fishing back in UT and would also look for the eggs/babies (which would make mom squawk and display all the harder). It will be fun for you to watch the eggs hatch and the babies grow. What a fun project for the next while for you and the kids.
ReplyDeleteWe love up-close and personal biology lessons--I think our children are destined to get a bit too much given who their parents are...
Great post, beautiful pics, fantastic teaching moment and an A+ to you Melancholy for taking advantage of it. LOVE the egg photo.
