Betty Draper Hair

I love Betty Draper's hair. After watching a few seasons of Mad Men, I've become obsessed with her perfect curls and started doing some research. I found this video tutorial which led me to purchase hot rollers. The results of my first attempt are seen in this years Christmas video.

Unfortunately, the style wasn't quite right and my hair-- ever resistant to holding a curl-- was almost straight again an hour later. Looks like I'll have to start looking into products like setting lotions. Anyone else have experience re-creating vintage hairstyles?

Edit: I just watched a few videos like this one: I'm certainly trying pin curls next!

I loved the video, you guys do such a cool job.

I have often thought that you looked quite a bit like Betty Draper. Good luck on the curls, I'm still trying to master the lips from that season and never seem to get it. I think I need better liner!

I did pin curls when I was dating dad - it's the only curl that ever held for me. Unfortunately, you can't predict the way it will turn out, and the bobbie pins make little wave marks. Sometimes it'd be awesome and other days I'd be dunking my head under the faucet to wash it all away.

I quit pin curls after we got married because there's nothing spells romance like a helmet head of tiny metal sticks! :)

I won a free make over a while back and the guy did a great job curling my very curl resistant hair with little product but hair spray. He says using a great shampoo and conditioner is the key. He then used a flat iron and did the curl kinda like scissors with wrapping ribbon and pinned the curls while they cooled. Then he took out the pins and spritzed with a lot of hair spray and it lasted like 3 days and everyone complimented on it...Wish I could recreate that! My younger sister can, perhaps I'll ask her! Good luck and great video! You have such patience and creativity as a family! Its great and makes me a little envious, too! Thanks for the Christmas cheer!

PS - My sister uses stuff from Sally's for fine or thin hair from shampoo to root lifter etc...I'll have to find the product names again, I had hoped to find them at one point, need some funds!

What a great idea! I'd have never thought of using a straight iron like that. I bought some flat clips to use for pin curls-- I'll have to post the process and results when I attempt it this week!

I started using pin curls a few months ago and don't think I'll ever go back! It was a struggle the first few times, but I eventually got the hang of it. I use the tutorial from strawberrykoivintage on YouTube. I have fine hair that never keeps curl and I live in humid Florida, but my pin curls have lasted 2 days! I love that I can brush them and they keep their form and body.
