Cooped Up

The temperatures are lovely and everything is in bloom-- so we decided that it was high time we took back our yard.

When the chickens were smaller, we hardly noticed them roaming about. But now they're full grown hens. Hens that dig in the gravel and spread it into the grass. Hens that roost on my lawn chairs and leave a mess behind. Hens that think they're house pets, and pile in front of the glass patio door, hoping to be let inside.

Worse of all, they've become hens that eat all our strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes and peaches-- unless we construct a sturdy fence around each. Finally, it became easier {and more aesthetically pleasing} to fence the chickens in rather than fence all our growing things.

The kids are heartbroken. Their little flock had only been caged for a few hours before Little Miss C begged to let them out. Like the heartless mother that I am, I refused and then basked in the sun in a chair on the porch, taking in the scent of orange blossoms and jasmine, the peace unmarred by poultry trying to perch on my lap.

Heaven.

No clearer definition of heaven than not having poultry trying to get on your lap. :)

Well it all certainly sounds heavenly to me. We would love to have chickens, but for now we'll have to be content hearing the ones across the street in the mornings. :) But I can't think what we could substitute for orange blossoms and jasmine. . .
