Sew Nice

It's Summer, which means that as the temperatures rise, so do my hemlines. I've been wanting a high-waisted bow skirt ever since Liz made one. Then Sarah posted a sweet tutorial and shortly after, I spotted a version being sold on Shabby Apple! It was DIY time. I took this skirt...

... which had become a bit loose in the last few months. I took it in, raised the hemline, and used the extra fabric to make a {removable} bow:

Voila! A new skirt at no cost. Things I learned:
  • I'm kind of a chicken when it comes to cutting into a perfectly good garment. {It takes me forever and gives me major anxiety}
  • I need to sweep my front stoop before taking pictures.

While browsing the rest of Sara's blog, I found her post on making sleeveless dresses modest. Using her suggestions, I took this anthropologie dress {which I've always had to wear with a cardigan}, cut out the pockets and used the material to add cap sleeves:

It's such a relief not to be forced to wear so many layers {though I do miss having pockets. I may put them back in using a different fabric}! Thus inspired, I'm busy modifying the rest of my sleeveless dresses and am excited to search for clearanced/thrift store dresses that I can similarly alter.

And that's what I'll be doing this weekend. Happy Friday, all!

We must think alike, I thought in my head "put.a.bow.on.it" just seconds before seeing it, then the same thing with sewing back in the pockets with a different fabric. definitely feeling your thought process. :)
P.S. your legs are so fanastically tan.

You might possibly be one of the most darling women I've ever not met. I love, LOVE the skirt with the bow. Weird though that in the black and white before pic I figured that skirt to be gray. I have also been modifying some thrift store clothes but nothing to the scale of your projects. Mostly just chopping the bottoms off of skirts and shirts. Would you come and mod{est}ify my wardrobe? :)

You smartie! The skirt in the black & white IS grey- a kind of tiny herringbone pattern, but I bought the exact same one in black, just didn't have a photo of it to use as a 'Before'. I'm modifying the grey one as well. :)

Crys- my tan legs end at the ankle! That's the problem with getting a tan from going running-- I always end up with sock lines. :D

Ditto on The Dragonfly's first line. SUPER cute alterations! And I LOVE the idea of using the pockets for sleeves. Genius!

Your seemstressing is so stylish. I love the way your brain thinks how can I make that look for less.
