Chicken Update

The chicks are getting bigger every day. They've started to feather out, and when we let them loose in the backyard, they scratch in the dirt and fight over the crickets that they find. We currently house them in a Chick N Hutch {found on craigslist for just $50} It's a tight fit for now, but we only plan on keeping two of them.

Last week I saw a tumbling composter for sale at Costco {only $100!} and I really, really want it. I like the idea of tossing all the chicken poop, vegetable scraps and such into the composter and letting it produce rich, dark soil.

Wow. Sometimes I sound like such a hippy.

{still no camera. Photo via}

Edit: want to see how crazy I really am? Someday I want one of these.

Wow! I am just green with jealous rage right now :) What are going to do with the others, since you're only keeping dos?

We found a neighbor that shares my wacko interest in gardening, chickens and compost. She's going to take a few of them. {Little Miss C made her promise she won't eat them! You should have seen her the other night while we were eating a whole roasted chicken and I started to explain exactly what it was.....:)}

We used to have one of those toilets in our cottage! It was great, there was no smell and my grandfather a grew fantastic vegetable garden.

I'm with you. Compositing, we're getting our garden ready now (we're gopher-proofing at the moment), and I've been feeling the itch for fresh eggs.

Hmmm......

It sounds like you showed more restraint than I would have in your place. I would've turned it into a repeat of the bear park/little E. epsiode (a classic, by any measure). Same story, new players. I could write Jerry Bruckheimer's next show:)

I love composting! You should get one. I love the fact that between composting and recycling we have very little trash. If it weren't for diapers (one of the modern conveniences I can't let go of) We would have ONE trash bag a week. I don't think I am quite ready for a composting toilet though... give me some time.
I am envious of the fresh eggs in your future.

Thanks for inspiring our family to stay connected, through myfamily and now blogging! Yay for being hippies! You don't know how much I talk or hear about all this GREENER stuff...we have chickens next door...i love hearing the rooster every morning!

At first I thought you were talking about one of those kitchen composters that is filled with worms. That's a little freaky to me. But the toilet? Even more freaky. :) I can't imagine eating any thing that had been fertilized with compost from there. Eeek!

Just to clarify, I would never use THAT compost on the garden! As hippy as I am, even I get grossed out by that. No, it would just be an alternative to plumbing. You know, off the grid and all that good stuff. :)
