I could paint the cabinets black to blend with the appliances, but that's just too pit-of-gloom-and-despair for me.
Solution? Gray cabinets! Mom suggested it last week, and all it took was a single image search for me to become a hard and fast convert.
The above cabinets are a bit green, but it gives me an idea of how black will look next to them.
As far as paint colors go, I'm thinking light gray {Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray} for the walls and a darker shade {Benjamin Moore Ozark Shadows} for the cabinets.
Now I just have to wait for a paycheck to come in. I have a feeling the hardware store is going to love me this year. :)

Looks fun! Anything you put together will blow everyone one away. I like where it's going!
Our lower cabinets are in dire need of a repaint. I am also thinking a shade of gray, althought it will be lighter than most you've shown. My appliances are white and my upper cabinets will stay white. What do you think? I can say this, painting the cabinets is WORK! But it will completely change the look of the room and you will love it.
I love the look of grey painted cabinets! Just a warning though - get paint samples! I have gone through maybe ten different grays in our house because the light changes them so much. Right now we used BM Stonington Grey in one of our hallways, and it does go a little blue at night for me when there isn't a lot of light. So test them out, good luck!
Another thought: most dishwasher panels are replaceable...and in different colors. Fridge is a bit harder, but that too can be painted or covered if the black and gray don't turn out the way you imagine.
Dragonfly- I love the look of white upper cabinets and/or open shelving. I think it would look great- go for it!
I love it and I think it will suit your house perfectly.
Great idea, go for it!
I love all these pictures and think that you're mom had a brilliant idea. It will be a lot of work with a fantastic pay off visually. Can't wait to see the before and after pictures.
I could live in everyone of these kitchens that are pictured on this post.
I'll have to keep this one in mind, too! I love that you remind me that decor is so temporary! I'm always the "settle on one thing and go with it permanently" type and need a reminder that moods and styles change and so can I:). Thanks!
