Scary Movies
To celebrate the new job, J and I broke into our emergency date night fund last weekend and went to a movie together. Though Chronicle came highly recommended, we eschewed it in favor of cheap thrills and saw The Woman in Black instead. I spent the entire time curled up as close to J as possible, trying not to scream and laughing at myself when I did anyway. Afterwards, J pried my hands from his and we talked {over ice cream} about why exactly I love scary movies even though they clearly freak the heck out of me.
It's simple, really. They're my roller coasters. They give me a rush of adrenaline while allowing me to stay safely buckled in. While I hate them for making me jump at shadows and forcing me to check inside the shower before using the bathroom, I love them for the same reason.
The first scary movie I can remember seeing was when I was six or seven-- it was The Lady in White and the scene where Lucas Haas is locked in the coat closet was the most frightening thing I'd ever seen. {For years, if I allowed myself to drift off into a half-sleep, I'd see that little girl's ghost and startle myself awake!} J saw The Shining at about the same age and was traumatized for life. He and his brothers once wrote Redrum on the walls of their house in lipstick. :)
What about you? Do you you like scary movies? Or do you get your kicks by {shudder!} skydiving and riding roller coasters? Do tell.
1. The Sixth Sense / 2. Wait Until Dark / 3. The Lady in White / 4. Psycho / 5. The Others / 6. The X-Files / 7. The Ring / 8. What Lies Beneath / 9. The Shining / 10. Millennium / 11. Invasion of the Body Snatchers / 12. The Changeling / 13. 1408 / 14. Rear Window / 15. The Silence of the Lambs / 16. Signs / 17. Jaws / 19. Let the Right One In

I'm glad you had the nerve to go see it. I was too chicken after I heard how scary it was. I have sworn off scary movies forever. But we just let our 14 year old see The Sixth Sense for the first time. He loved it.
PS. Silence of the Lambs is THE movie that swore me off rated R movies forever. I still have nightmares about it.
Perhaps this is "cheating", but I've only ever seen Silence of the Lambs (and many other scary movies) edited on TV or through ClearPlay. No less scary, but less gross, for sure. :)
PS I love the Sixth Sense!
Oh my, I used to watch Lady in White all the time! I remember hearing the song the little girl sings a couple years ago and it freaked me out until I remembered where I first heard it!
I LOVELOVELOVE The Lady in White! That is a GREAT scary movie. I even posted about it once. I've long thought that a remake of that movie would be great--if Hollywood could contain themselves and not go too overboard, but keep all the charm while cleaning up the 'special effects.'
And Jaws. Jaws and I have a sick love affair. When I was younger I would have a hard time taking a bath after watching that movie. I could see a great white shark busting through the bath tub and eating me alive. I wouldn't go into lakes because I hated that feeling of not seeing what was beneath me...
Overall I'm sorta picky about scary movies. I watched way too many made-for-tv movies about real life serial killers and that stuff messes with me. So I can't do too scary. But Psycho, Wait until Dark, Rear Window, etc are great.
Love scary movies! I grew up renting low budget, 70s horror films with my elementary school best friend on Friday nights. We loved "The Shining," "Alice, Sweet Alice" and "Halloween."
I agree about the rated R stuff. I made the mistake of going to Paranormal Activity this fall and could not sleep for weeks. I'm talking I had to call a friend to come over and sleep in my bed with me, so terrified. The scene where the boyfriend (can't remember) walks into the garage and there are all those women in black waiting to kill him? Scariest moment of my life.
I luv these kinds of scary movies - intelligent scary as opposed to horror gross scary. Jump at your own shadow scary. (Or someone else's :)) I'd add Arachnaphobia to the list because it's such a good Tween scary movie, and Deceived. I haven't seen 9, 12, 13, 15, 17, 0r 19. 18 must've been scary beyond words, right? ;)
I take that back - I have too seen "Let the Right One In"! Scary, scary! And the saddest happy ending ever.
Psychological scary is too much for me. I can handle Harry Potter Scary, but not much beyond that.
No - very much do NOT like scary movies... also not a fan of any kind of risk taking or roller coasters, so apparently I'm just trying to play it safe.
I like psychological thrillers, but nothing scary, gory, etc.!!
I remember that X-files episode! I still get the creeps in port-a-potties thanks to that show.
And, I am glad I am not the only one who checks behind the shower curtain. :-S
I don't really like scary movies although I love Rear Window and the Sixth Sense....hmm.....so I guess I like some scary movies.
I'm curious to know what you thought of A Woman in Black.
