Bookshelves

I find that books are read more often when they are seen. Heaven knows I'm guilty of grabbing armloads of books from the library based solely on cover appeal. I like this bookshelf, and have been looking around for something similar, but more affordable. These instructions seem pretty strait forward. I'm filing them away as one of the many projects I plan to take on when I establish separate boy/girl rooms for the kids this summer. Anyone have this type of bookcase? Do you like it, or is it too much visual clutter?

I've been coveting the PB one for a while too, so I'm thrilled to see this much more affordable (and I think more attractive) DIY version. Thanks for the tip!

I've always thought it was a shame that the covers of books - the best part - are always hidden. This is a nice solution and so perfect for kids. Remember the bookshelves in the family room in Oregon? the bottom shelf was like that, only a little slanty, and I love, love, loved it. That's where I'd put my Elle Decor and Metropolitan Home magazines and feel elitist :)

a friend of mine has that bookshelf and looks fantastic in the baby's room. she loves it. for me- we have too many books, so i wouldn't be able to utilize it as much as i'd like, but i do like that it's up off the floor and almost turns into a rotating gallery of sorts- with the covers always changing as you pull different books out.
children also recognize books by their covers, so it would help them visualize what they like much quicker.

We have that bookshelf from PB kids, but it never really got used because it can't fit many books. So if it's home decor that you are after, no problemo, but if you want ease and convenience for little ones so that they read more, I suggest the mobile book organizer from Lakeshore Learning. It is expensive, but well worth it. My daughter and son each have one in their rooms. They hold 100's of books that are right at their height, and easy for them to browse through. Good luck! http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/search/results.jsp
